PRESENT YOUR DATA

Quantitative Presenting or “Data Storytelling” focuses on the creation of clear and effective charts and data visualizations.

Trainings usually begin with “Design 101,” an overview of graphic design principles that will be incorporated into the later work.

1-Second Chart®

This is the proprietary heart of the training in which attendees learn how to design charts that can be read and understood in a near instant. Through techniques such as The McKinsey Rule, Direct Labeling, Emphasis, Color Reduction, and more, attendees learn how to communicate the story of their data as quickly and clearly as possible, saving everyone valuable time and distraction.

Unique Charts

This module reveals alternatives to typical charts that are more visual and often work better in presentation situations to reveal key results. ”Problem charts” such as pies and clustered columns are addressed along with solutions such as bullet graphs, proportional shapes, and more.

Tables

Tables don’t get much love or attention, but they are an essential data tool, and users will walk away knowing how to create and redesign tables for maximum clarity and use.

Efficiency & Pitfalls

Time is beyond valuable, and so we show attendees how to speed up chart creation and formatting using techniques such as placeholders, templates, and Microsoft Themes. We also cover typical Data Viz pitfalls such as Y-axis manipulation, incorrect Excel-PowerPoint workflows, 3D, and more.

Hands-on Exercises are included throughout, and Office Hours can be scheduled following the training where attendees work one-on-one with Nolan to address specific challenges in their own projects.

While the training is largely Microsoft-centric, the overall best practices and design applies to any type of software you may be working with.
